Studying the link between radio galaxies and AGN fuelling with relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of flickering jets
Published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2023
We consider the hydrodynamics of relativisitc AGN jets in 2D and 3D, modulating the jet energy as pink noise. We present the morpholigical and energetic differences expected from such variation, finding high variability systems can feature strong spherical blow-outs along the jet spine.
Black hole binaries in AGN accretion discs – II. Gas effects on black hole satellite scatterings
Published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2023
We simulate interactions between initially isolated BHs in AGN discs in 3D using isothermal smoothed-particle-hydrodynamics. We probe the dependency of binary formation on the initial conditions of the system.
Gas assisted binary black hole formation in AGN discs
Published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2024
We simulate interactions between initially isolated BHs embedded in an AGN disc. We present regions where binary formation is more likely, spanning a parameter space in impact parameter and ambient disc density.
Disc novae: thermodynamics of gas-assisted binary black hole formation in AGN discs
Published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2024
We simulate interactions between initially isolated BHs in AGN discs using an abiabatic fluid equation of state which accomodates contributions from gas and radiation. We show how violent close encounters between BH minidiscs can drive significant thermal emmission in the form of “disc novae”.
Black Hole Merger Rates in AGN: contribution from gas-captured binaries
Submitted to Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2024
We perform Monte Carlo simulations of black hole and binary black hole formation, evolution and mergers across the AGN mass spectrum, estimating merger rates and properties for comparison to LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observations.
The formation of mini-AGN discs around IMBHs and their dynamical implications
Published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2025
This study explores the formation and implications of mini-active galactic nucleus (mAGN) discs around intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) embedded in gas-rich globular/nuclear clusters (GCs). We examine the parameter space for stable mAGN discs, considering the influence of IMBH mass, disc radius, and gas density on disc stability.
Hydrodynamic simulations of black hole evolution in AGN discs II: inclination damping for partially embedded satellites
Accepted by Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2025
We simulate the damping of inclination for black holes on orbits with small inclinations \(i<2^\circ\) to the gaseous discs of AGN. We find that for suitably small inclinations, changes in inclination are dependent only on the local gas mass.
Prompt gravitational-wave mergers aided by gas in Active Galactic Nuclei: The hydrodynamics of binary-single black hole scatterings
Published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2025
We simulate interactions single and binary black holes within AGN discs using 2D hydrodynamic simulations, probing the dependence of merger probability on the precense of gas.
A relativistic jet from a neutron star breaking out of its natal supernova remnant
Published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2025
We present radio images of a supernova remnant featuring a relativitic jet punching out of the nova bubble. We qualitiatively reproduce the phenomena using hydrodynamic simulations.
3D adiabatic simulations of binary black hole formation in AGN
Published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2025
We simulate close encounters between black holes in AGN using the first 3D non-isothermal hydrodynamical treatment. We probe what AGN conditions increase the likelihood of binary formation and offer models for formation likelihood.
Hydrodynamic simulations of black hole evolution in AGN discs I: orbital alignment of highly inclined satellites
Published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2025
We simulate the capture of black holes on orbits highly inclined to the gaseous disc of AGN. We find that drag by gas gravity is able to embed black holes into the disc faster than previous expected.
